| When Melbourne film-maker Jim Kane need the right voice for a hyperactive prankster with a can on his head, comedian Dave Hughes was hundreds of just the man. Hughes is the voice of Kidd Kelly, the star of a nine-minute animation which premieres next month. Judith Lucy provides the voice of Kidd's overworked and unappreciated mum, Kitty, who turfs her truant son out of their caravan, prompting a mighty adventure.
Kane, whose work has screened at the Melbourne Fringe Festival, said the character was inspired by family trips to Glenrowan and a mind-numbing stint of fruit-picking in Shepparton. "I was thinking of Ned Kelly and fruit-picking and a cannery and getting a can stuck on your head," he said. "When you're fruit-picking you've got a lot of time to think".
The animation will appear on Channel 7 in June, in the background of the David Wenham telemovie Stiff, and Kane hopes it will become a series.
Kidd Kelly will screen at Cinema Europa at the Jam Factory on May 19. For tickets phone 1300 555 400. |
