| Kidd Kelly is a new animated short from writer/producer Jim Kane and director Tim Bain that puts a new spin on the celebrated Aussie legend, Ned Kelly. Kidd is a hyperactive young prankster who lives with his mother Kitty in a caravan park and, courtesy of a local cannery incident, has a can stuck on his head thus resembling the prominent Australia historical figure. When Kitty becomes fed up with her rascal son, she sends him packing one afternoon. Out of boredom Kidd creates a new extreme sport, which leads to inevitable pandemonium. For Kane, the genesis of Kidd's character from his historical namesake was an obvious progression. "On one level Ned Kelly is a hero, on another he's a villian," says Kane. "But to me, he's just a freak with a can on his head. That's really where Kidd came from".
The eight-minute animation features familiar voices from Australian film, television and radio including comedian Dave Huges (TV's The Glasshouse), Judith Lucy (Bad Eggs) and Pia Miranda (Looking for Alibrandi) and will be pitched by the makers as a pilot for an animated television series. |
